Pitch for
Documentary
My documentary will be about what it is really like to be a
twin because there is always a general understanding that it is great, because
many people say “oh I would love to be a twin”, but my answer to that would be
that they are correct in some ways but also they are wrong in many, many
different ways.
Firstly, I will be talking about my target audience which my
primary target audience will target male and female teenage twins. The reason
behind this is, because I feel that if my primary target audience are male and
female teenage twins it means that most of the things that I will showing in
this documentary they will be able to relate and make/ mention some of their
personal experiences of being a teenager and a twin.
My secondary target audience will be anyone, male and
female, aged between 10 to 50 years old because it is quite common for many
people to have one or more siblings whether that is a twin brother/sister or
just an older or younger sibling, again I have done this so that the secondary
can relate personal experiences of having an annoying older or younger sibling.
My tertiary target audience will be largely aimed at the
audience who doesn’t have a sibling let alone a twin, I have done this for two
reasons. Reason one being that, it allows them to connect with the documentary
more because they can see what is it to have a brother or a sister and the
second reason is because, it allows the audience to see what it is really like
to be a twin and the show them how close twins actually are and to show the
rare bond and relationship that only twins can share.
After a large amount of research, I will be trying to use
most of Bill Nicholas’ modes of documentary, but the main mode that I will be
trying to incorporate in my documentary as well as the others is the
participatory mode, the participatory mode in documentary is where the encounter
between the filmmaker and subject is recorded and the filmmaker actively
engages with the situation they are documenting.
But I am going to be introducing a twist in my documentary
but I will be participating with myself whiling filming it myself so it will be
a sort of vlog documentary for some of the clips in the documentary. The other
modes of documentary that I be using are expository mode, this is because I
think that it is important my target audience to learn a bit about twins as
well as seeing all the good and bad of actually being a twin. Observational
mode of documentary is where the filmmaker and camera men try and stay away
from the subjects, this is better known as fly on the wall documentary, I will
be using this mode in some of my clips for my documentary.
Also I will be trying to incorporate the reflexive mode of
documentary in my documentary, because if my target audience can ask questions
about the documentary it means that the information and style of documentary
has gone it through them watching but also it gives the audience new
information about something maybe that they didn’t know much about before
watching the documentary.
Also interviewing parents, friends and other siblings of me
and Sam to get all the gritty information about what we are like with each
other around other people compared to our family and to see if our behaviour
towards one another chances.
Because me and Sam are big on our sport especially our rugby
I will record environments like being on the sports filed passing a ball as
well as other environments this will be done to help show how competitive we
are with each other because we both think that we are better than one another.
The locations I will be using in the documentary will be
filmed in familiar environments for the subjects I have done this because it
allows the subjects to behaviour as they would normally because it is a
familiar environment where they know and feel safe- so this links to the codes
and conventions of documentary of the filmmaker’s responsibilities toward the
subjects safety and well-being but also gives me a better chance of getting the
subjects personality across to the audience without it feeling forced or fake
which many documentaries nowadays are judged by audience because they may believe
that it is fake.
I will be filming the one clips in the car whiling Sam is
driving now this may or may not be distract him from the road, but I think that
it will be good because it allows people to see how we are in the car together
and for some people/parents this could be seen as scary or worrying.
But I will be filming in a home environment like in the kitchen
possibly interviewing my mum, and when I will be filming this I will be able to
show the audience the information about being a twin because it is in a bit more
of the formal environment rather than a car.
